FROM THE KITCHEN OF THE HEALTHY DIVA AN INVITATION TO WOMEN OF THE CARRIBBEAN, (for the brothers who are checking out this message please pass it on to ladies who you feel may benefit from this. Also please let me know if you are a practitioner who wants to take part or someone who wants to attend the Men of the Carribbean event).

*please note there are a variety of individuals attending these events and there will be an opportunity to network with the SMALL group that attends...networking is not about handing out your cards to a million people it is about handing out your cards to the right one or two!

Ladies, join me in this class for Carribbean women who want to get their health on track. This workshop focuses on nutrition and the immune system with an emphasis on making fermented veggies (used to boost the immune system, cleanse the colon and brighten skin to name a few benefits). Parts of this event also focus on nutrition and detox and their relationship to prosperity, and the wellness of your reproductive system and breast health with at home detox.

This deadly combination is what is attacking the bodies of individuals and we are unaware until it is too late.

CAFFEINATED DRINKS MAKE YOU FAT!

WHAAAATTT??????
So many people are not aware that their coffee and caffeinated drinks actually can make them fat.
So many studies show caffeinated drinks speed up the metabolism. An accelerated metabolism is not always a good thing. 

Millions of men and women stroll into fitness classes, meetings or start their day with their large cup o’ Joe….if they only knew the real truth.

Studies have shown the effects of caffeine on the adrenal glands, thyroid and hormonal system and in general they end up producing a stress response as the glands are being “overstimulated” increasing cortisol (a stress hormone) levels keeping the body in the flight or fight stage.  

Sadly so many men and women believe a cup of coffee (or three in a super sized cup) to give them a jolt is good, in actual fact it’s wreaking havoc on the body system. The adrenals, thyroid, metabolism etc. just keeps chugging along and eventually slows down in minute unnoticeable amounts….day after day until they just slow down completely, change our metabolism or just burn out altogether, showing up as fatigue, sluggishness, excess tiredness etc.

Being aware of how your food choices affect your whole body is a good thing, a green smoothie to boost your energy before or after a workout would be a better choice. If a food or drink is making you jittery, shaky, angry and cranky maybe it’s not such a bad thing to skip it altogether.

Try going without caffeine for a few days or weeks and see if you are more mellow, peaceful and energized. Don't forget you may experience some symptoms as your body withdraws from the caffeine. If this happens, drink lots of water and fresh fruit juices to flush your system and do deep breathing while telling yourself softly.....and this too shall pass :o)

GREEN SMOOTHIE ENERGY BOMB!
2 Cups Apple Juice
1Cup spinach (you won’t taste it after)
1 Medium ripe banana
¼ cup strawberries

Blend and enjoy, for a thicker or thinner smoothie, add more or less liquid to the blender. The greens and fruit in this smoothie provide protein, fats and readily available energy for a quick  boost without the ill effects on the body.

ORGANIC V NON ORGANIC


As a holistic nutritionist not only have I come up on this questions from clients, I have had this question thrown around with associates as well.

It is not that organic is better than conventional, it is the chemicals, toxins and pollutants used in the farming practices of growing conventional produce that makes choosing organically grown foods better.

Sadly to increase crop volume conventional growers use fertilizers that are not only harmful to the environment but harmful to the human body. These chemicals leach into the produce which is consumed by you and your family......and you are what you eat.

With organic farming less toxic farming practices are used. It is not to say that organic farmers do not use chemicals at all, they just use ones that are less harmful to the end user.....you and your family. Organic farming uses many forms of more sanitized practices that are deemed cleaner and safer for humans and therein the product from organic farming has less chemicals and toxins to pass along to you.

Children have been found to contain higher amounts of specific chemicals in their little bodies used in conventional farming v. children who have been raised eating similar organic foods having none or far reduced amounts.

The Environmental Working Group in the U.S. has put out many articles on this topic and has produced a list of produce we can buy conventional and the list of what it suggests we buy organic.

I hope this has helped inform you on this point, and you understand that eating organic is not better in terms of nutrient density, it is better because your body does not have to work to reduce the toxic load that comes with conventional foods.

Eating organic is about reducing the toxic load we carry in our bodies because of the exposure we face daily,  our food, air , water and environment, if we can eat foods that are affordable and are less toxic why would you not want to?
